Midwife of the Year awarded to Cairns Midwife

June 2008

Cairns Private Hospital midwife Pam AhCheen, has been named Queensland Midwife of the Year at an event coinciding with International Midwives Day in May.

Pam was selected from a field of 201 statewide nominations. Her selection was no great surprise according to the Cairns Private midwifery team.

Women’s Unit Nurse Manager Marge Foley said there could not be a more worthy recipient, “so kind and thoughtful, an excellent, very confident, competent and skilled young midwife”.

“Pam came to us as an enthusiastic graduate. We supported her through her development and mentored her. We’re so very proud of her.”

Pam said the experience at Cairns Private Hospital has provided her with opportunities to advance quickly.

“I’m proud of the recognition but it is a reflection of the skill and support provided by the team of midwives who have supported and trained me.”

New mother Michelle Borg who nominated Pam for the award said she simply would not have had such a rewarding birth without her.

Mrs Borg said, “Pam’s communication skills were outstanding, she knew exactly when and how to answer my every thought and offered professional advice when needed. I felt safe, confident, and in control with her support throughout my whole labour and post natal care.”

“I just think she deserves this honour, I can’t thank her enough,” Mrs Borg added.
